Chapter 14

The hospital loomed in the distance, its sterile walls and fluorescent lights casting a cold glow on the surrounding landscape. I shuddered at the thought of what lay within the building—sickness, pain, and perhaps the key to unlocking this mystery.

“Are you ready for this?” Cassius’s hand rested warmly against my arm as he led us through the sliding glass doors. His deep voice was reassuring, and I nodded, trying to swallow the lump in my throat.

“Evening, Doctor Morgenthrall. We’ve had quite the adventure with your last three patients.” A middle-aged nurse bulged her eyes at our soppy appearance. “Looks like you have as well. Shall we check your friends out? The water’s rather cold this time of year.”

I shivered and smiled. “On that, we agree.”

“Yes, let’s get them examined.” Cassius flicked his eyes over our damp clothes before he gestured for us to follow him down the hallway. “Come along, ladies. I need to visit with our current patients first.”

As we strode down the antiseptic-smelling hall, I braced against a sense of foreboding settling over me. What if we didn’t find any answers here? What if the attacker struck again while we were vulnerable in the hospital?

We arrived at the room where Shay and Rowan were being treated. Inside, the two women lay on their beds, hooked to IVs and monitors. They looked pale and fragile as they slept in peaceful slumber.

The guilt I felt for suspecting them washed over me anew. Struggling to swallow, I approached Shay’s bedside as she stirred. “I’m so sorry.” I patted her arm. “We initially thought it was you...”

She gasped and opened her eyelids and gave me a weak smile. “It’s okay,” she rasped. “I understand why you would think that.”

As Cassius studied her medical chart, I slid a look at the still-sleeping Rowan. “Shay, I know you’re not feeling well. Can you tell me what happened when you went to Worth Manor?”

Shay’s smile turned into a frown of pain, and she squeezed her eyes shut. “I don’t remember much,” she said, her voice barely audible. “The last thing I remember is drinking something... something Rowan claimed Finnick sent her.”

“Finnick?” Cassius’ eyebrows raised in surprise. “What did he send?”

“Supposedly a rare form of witch’s brew.” Shay grimaced as she spoke. “Rowan claimed it would help me... with something. I don’t remember what.” She coughed and winced, clutching at her belly. “But it made me sick. I started feeling dizzy and out of it, then everything went black.”

I leaned over the ill shadow witch. “But do you actually know if the brew came from Finnick?”

Her complexion taking on a waxy pallor, Shay swallowed, the sound popping loud as she cut a look toward the forty-something woman lying still in the next bed in a room filled with the stringent smell of disinfectant and the bitterness of suspicion. “Rowan...” She hesitated, her eyes darting around before meeting mine again. “She’s always been obsessed with her mother’s work and feels trapped between the fae and witch worlds like she doesn’t belong anywhere.
